Sponsors and Appointers

  • The initial sponsors of the Deep Research initiative were Will and Elizabeth McPherson. Will and Elizabeth McPherson created the Deep Research Foundation in 2006 as a humanitarian and scientific trust “to invest in the human race”. Will is an internationally respected businessman, scientist and inventor. Based on his inventions, his company FlowTech Inc grew into a high technology powerhouse before it was bought in 2008 for over $US3.5 billion.
  • Professor Elizabeth McPherson is a noted marine biologist who has been a leader of efforts to study, conserve and protect ocean fauna. Born and educated in Australia, and having worked for much of her professional life in California, Professor McPherson is well-versed in issues concerning the Pacific and Southern Oceans. Professor McPherson is a member of the International Whaling Commission’s Scientific Committee and has published widely on cetacean biology and ecology. For her pioneering work on threats to cetacean ecosystems, Professor McPherson received the European Union’s 2008 “Descartes Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research”. She was further recognized for her research into deep-sea marine life by her selection to receive the prestigious 2010 Cody Award in Ocean Sciences from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.
  • Will and Elizabeth McPherson have reinvested the wealth gained through the sale of their ownership in FlowTech Inc in the Deep Research initiative. They believe that from those to whom much is given, much is expected, and that science and technology has the power to solve critical problems confronting humanity. They have become noted philanthropists, pursuing a course of “investing in the human race” by funding research and development aimed at making long-term improvements in the human condition through the beneficial application of technology and scientific know-how.
