The Seastead AI - SHARON

  • In a potentially hazardous and complex environment like Deep Home, safety is critical and depends on correct management of hull integrity, life support systems, fire protection, and all the complex systems that provide comfort and safety. The crew is selected, trained and qualified to manage and maintain these systems.

A great deal of the routine management and monitoring is done by Deep Home’s Seastead Control System or AI. This is a distributed and highly redundant expert system that monitors systems integrity, providing a high level of automation of control and environmental systems, and which has safety of personnel as its overriding priority.

The Seastead AI is called the “Ship and Seastead Autonomous Resource and Operations Network” or SHARON, for short. SHARON identifies each crew member through an RFID tag in the identity bracelet each receives on boarding. SHARON controls crew and resident access within the Seastead to appropriate areas and functions. SHARON can speak and respond to voice commands (in situationally appropriate ways, depending on the context of person and location, for instance). For example, by saying “SHARON, please page Mark”, one can cause SHARON to work out who “Mark” is based on the speaker’s identity (partner or child, for instance), where that person is at the moment, and then to page them. By custom, SHARON, like a ship, is regarded as female. Usually, SHARON will only speak when spoken to. SHARON knows she is being addressed when a verbal instruction is prefaced with her name.

SHARON also manages the mana system. Under the supervision of the Senate Clerk, SHARON manages and tracks votes in the Senate and by plebiscite. Only SHARON knows if and how each individual voted in a plebiscite. SHARON tracks performance of community obligation activities. SHARON receives, tallies and tracks mana transactions between individuals. SHARON maintains and publishes each mid-month, a comprehensive set of mana rankings as at the end of the previous month.
